What is the RetroChallenge?
Its a look at old hardware by using it, it's a discovery of the kit you loved when you were younger, it's a play for the sake of it, its stopping computers ending up in landfill sites when they are still useful, its a bit of fun for those geeks out there that want to play with old computers.
If you have to ask why, then I would think that this would not be for you!
I participate - read my blog here - starting on 01 of July!
myoldmac.net RETROCHALLENGE Projects

Yes, I colored it because the original case was very dirty. Looks great.
I add some photos to the RetroBlog later. _________________ MacOS aka Oliver

sadly that one is in French - I understand one word: disquettes...
I had a look to my 3,5 inch ext disk drive manual, and the Apple //gs manual
but it simply says, connect and run... _________________ MacOS aka Oliver

I found out that the PRAM battery on the logic board of my Apple //gs is empty. Symptom: All settings from the control panel (-> press "option" at startup) are not saved after a restart. When I change the Slot settings in the control panel to Slot1: your Card and Slot 7: APPLE TALK the 3.5 drive is booting the MouseDesk system. Sadly this settings are not saved after a restart due to the empty battery.
Because I have a ROM01 Version with a soldered battery I need to get out the solder and dig under the power supply to get the PRAM battery replaced. _________________ MacOS aka Oliver

Using a simple wire snip and small needle-nose pliers one can install the Battery Pack in about 2 minutes. No soldering or possible damage to your Motherboard either! Just cut the axial leads as close to the old battery as possible, straighten the leads, insert the AMP MTA connectors from the Battery Pack on to the leads and you're done

Thank you for the info, I will add it to the project page.
But I managed today to solder a new battery to the motherboard,
there will be a demo at the project page later.
I have some of the needed 3.6 volt 1/2 A batteries with extended metal sticks at the poles to solder them. So it was an easy job and no danger of overheating. The battery works well, the settings are saved after a restart.
Strange wise the 3.5 inch drive only loads the MouseDesk system if I disable the 5.25 Inch drive on port 7 in the control panel of the Apple //GS. I don't know why - I remember to have had both running on the Apple //GS. _________________ MacOS aka Oliver

i remember reading this somewhere (i can't find it for the moment)
not the same, but
page 26 IIGS owner manual (231 pages)
If you have a 5.25-inch drive and a 3.5-inch drive connected to the disk
drive port, the 5.25-inch drive is you startup drive. If you want the
computer to start up from a disk in your 3.5-inch drive (which you do if
you plan to use the Apple IIGS training disk), make sure you 5.25-inch
drive is empty. When you computer can't find a disk in the 5.25-inch
drive, it will check the 3.5-inch drive next. Depending on whether the
majority of your application program disks are 3.5-inch or 5.25-inch, at
some point you might want to use the Control Panel Program,
explained in
Appendix A, to change the startup drive.
power on, scanning port 7 ... 6... 5
Generally this system works fine, but what if you want to bypass the disk
drive connected to slot 6 and start up from the disk drive connected to
slot 5? What you do is change the startup slot from Scan, the standard
setting, to slot 5 or any other slot containing the drive you want to start up from. ............
Recommended slots :
Printer Printerport Slot1
Modem Modemport Slot2
Slot 3 : no card
any card Slot4
3.5-inchdrive Diskdriveport Slot5 (smartport)
5.25-inchdrive Diskdriveport Slot6 _________________ my apple computers |
