Apple-1 to be auctioned off on May 25, 2013

May 6, 2013

Currently, there are estimated to only be six working models of the original Apple 1 left, and one of them is going up for auction in Germany on May 25th. Computerworld reports that it was originally purchased by one Fred Hatfield, who also received a letter signed by Steve Jobs offering an upgrade from the $666.66 Apple-1 to an Apple II 4K motherboard for another $400. According to Mike Willegal, who has tracked down many Apple 1 computers, this particular one had an interface for a selectric printer grafted onto it. Willegal also says that the reason for Jobs' letter was that the original owner "complained to Apple about limited software availability."

The auction price for the computer is expected to land somewhere between $250,000 and $400,000 when it's sold off — though strangely it apparently didn't sell last year when it was put up for auction by the same company. We've seen a few Apple 1 computers sold at auction recently, with one sold in June of 2012 fetching $374,500 and another this past December for $640,000.

Although this latest Apple 1 isn't likely to hit those heights, it still has plenty going for it — it's signed by Steve Wozniak, who built the motherboard by hand. Most importantly, it's in complete working order, as the video posted by the auctioneer proves. The video shows the usual command line on the screen, as you'd expect, but also displays an ASCII-art image of Woz and Jobs printed across the screen.

Happy Birthday Macintosh!

January 24, 2013

29 insanely great years...

In late 1983, people began seeing odd commercials on TV, commercials which promised a new kind of computer. One that promised (borrowing from the Orwell novel) 1984 won't be like Nineteen Eighty-Four."

Happy Birthday Macintosh!

What the hack is a web-app ?

The web-app resides on server and is accessed via the Internet. It performs specified tasks - potentially all the same ones as a native application - for the mobile user, usually by downloading part of the application to the device for local processing each time it is used. The software is written as Web pages in HTML and CSS, with the interactive parts in Java. This means that the same application can be used by most mobile devices that can surf the Web (regardless of the brand of phone).

In Memory of Steve Jobs | 1955 - 2011

October 6, 2011

Steven P. Jobs passed away on October 5th, 2011 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was just 56 years old. We mourn his passing, and wish his family the very best. The Apple chairman and former CEO who made personal computers, smartphones, tablets, and digital animation mass-market products passed away today. We're going to miss him. Deeply, and personally.

In 1976 he started Apple in a garage. Together with Steve Wozniak, he shipped the first true fully-built personal computer, the Apple I. He drove development of the Mac, understanding that it was the future of computers. The great thing that we would all see.

Prior to Steve Jobs, computers were alien to most of us. They were accessible to few people without an engineering degree. Not merely because of their complex operating procedures, but also because they were so cold and so inhuman. Jobs understood that they could be something more than that. That while computers would never be people, he could endow them with humanity. He could transform them into machines that not only anyone could use, but that everyday people would enjoy using thanks to the art of great design. He made them something that would be part of our lives. And he did that again and again.

He changed the way movies are made, the way music is sold, the way stories are told, the very way we interact with the world around us. He helped us work, and gave us new ways to play. He was a myth made man. Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Steve leaves behind a company that only he could build, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple.
