System » PatternMania - v 2

Welcome to PatternMania 2!

It is time for edition number two of unusual desktop pattern resources. The first edition was received very well indeed. Hopefully this one will do equally well. But calling these designs 'patterns' is a little misleading; simulations is more appropriate in most cases. Often, it is the concept that 'makes' a design. For example, the 'LegalPad' design is not very elaborate when it comes to the actual design, but it is the illusion of a legal pad that makes it amusing.

Another important aspect of desktop design is the 'red eye syndrome.' This is the problem you get from staring at a too colorful and/or mesmerizing desktop background for a whole day. Moderation is the key here. Tone it down and keep it simple and your eyes will thank you for it. But on the other hand, sometimes you just want to go crazy and forget about functionality. I always include one or two of those, just to get it out of my system.

Now to the patterns:  Tonight's offering consists of sixteen desktop patterns; numbers 13-24. All the patterns included are designed for use with, at least, 8-bit color boards (256 color mode), but some patterns will work in 4-bit, and one or two even in 1-bit. Here follows a brief description of the designed patterns, followed by detailed installation instructions for those who feel they need it.

System » MenuChoice - v 2.1

MenuChoice has several advantages over Apple Menu Options.

The Desktop entry at the top of the Apple menu.

The Recent entry right below the Desktop listing; Apple Menu Options lists recent items much further down, near the bottom of the Apple menu.

Everything accessed recently via the Apple menu is listed; Apple Menu Options doesn't track recent folders or Control Panels.
Recent items are listed with the most recently accessed item first, not alphabetically (which Apple Menu Options does).
With MenuChoice, you can choose to have folders listed first, last, or in alphabetical order under the Desktop heading, a very nice touch.

Version 3.7.1 fixes an error which could sometimes cause crashes when scanning very rare kinds of files while pass the new "more lenient" check for damaged resource forks which was introduced in 3.7.

System » Disinfectant 3.71

Finally, take note that a lot of old Mac Software floating around the Internet is virus infected (usually with macvOS/nVIR). You can take care of this by scanning with Disinfectant 3.71.

Wish I were... V2.0 - Author: Martin Blitz

The "Wish I were..." control panel provides a method for a system to identify its hardware as another hardware type, via the Gestalt "mach" selector.

The reason for creating this control panel was to assist individuals who install clock chippers, especially to Power Macs.  Some applications (for example MachTen) use the response from the Gestalt "mach" selector to determine a Macintosh's hardware type, and thus perform run-time configuration.  Clock chipped machines may respond with a value that does not correspond to an existing machine (for example, a clock chipped PowerMac 6100 response as a 6100/80), and some applications may be confused.
This utility can be used to force Gestalt to respond with an acceptable value, and thus the application will function correctly.
