Education » Macintosh Edsac Simulator

Macintosh Edsac Simulator
The Edsac simulator is a faithful software evocation of the EDSAC computer as it existed in 1949-51. The user interface has all the controls and displays of the original machine, and the system includes a library of original programs, subroutines, and debugging software. The simulator is intended for use in teaching the history of computing; as a tutorial introduction to the classic "von Neumann" computer; or as an historical experience for current computer practitioners.
The EDSAC was the world’s first practical stored-program computer; it was designed and built at Cambridge University, and performed its first fully automatic calculation on 6 May 1949. The Warwick University simulator is a faithful representation of the EDSAC designed to run on the Macintosh computer.
The user interface has all the controls and displays of the original machine, and the system includes a library of original programs, subroutines, debugging software, and program documentation. This report includes a description of the EDSAC and an account of the seminal programming techniques developed for it during 1949-51.
Several demonstration programs and programming problems are supplied, so that users can gain first-hand experience of what it was like to develop and run a program on a first-generation computer.

Education » Orbit3d v1.0b1

Orbit3d v1.0b1

Orbit3d is a program by Aaron Golden. It simulates the motion of bodies in space according to Newton's Laws, in three dimensions. The program's main documentation can be found in the "Documentation" folder.  To contact Aaron Golden about Orbit3d, or any of his other programs, email:

Education » MusicMentor 1.1

MusicMentor is a shareware HyperCard stack to help music students
learn to read written music quickly. It shows a note on a music stave
and asks the user to click on the corresponding key on the three
octave piano keyboard within a certain time. The user can change the
amount of time allowed for each note, and also decide whether to be
tested on whole notes, sharps/flats, or both. MusicMentor remembers
and tests more frequently on the notes which each user gets wrong.
MusicMentor 1.1 requires a 640x400 or larger screen, and HyperCard or
HyperCard Player 2.1 or later.

Usefull also to draw shapes of Elementary Euclidean Geometry.

Education » Galaxy Collider

Galaxy Collider

To load a new simulation, first select "New…" from the "File" menu, and use the resulting Get File dialog to open the new simulation data. Notice that this file is any old text file - this is so that people can create their own startup data files and give them a run. If you want something to try, look in the Examples folder included with Galaxy Collider.

Education » MacBreadboard™ 1.1

MacBreadboard's purpose is to provide a simulation of the actual TTL breadboarding experience. WinBreadboard™ is designed to work like the real hardware trainers used in many digital circuits courses. Unlike existing simulators which use a schematic-based approach to describe circuits, WinBreadboard uses a unique metaphor (computer representation of a real world object) in which users manipulate chips and wires NOT individual gates. This interaction provides users with a more realistic understanding of how electronic comments are actually used. This program may be used as a supplement to digital circuits course work. WinBreadboard is also a viable alternative in situations where digital trainers are not available.

Education » Atom in a Box a.k.a. Orbitals, v1.0.4

Atom in a Box is an application that aids in visualizing the Hydrogenic atomic orbitals, a prime and otherwise unwieldy example of quantum mechanics.  Unlike other tools in this category, this program raytraces through a three-dimensional cloud density that represents the wavefunction's probability density and presents its results in real-time (up to 48 frames per second on the latest hardware).   The user interface is very interactive and provides a wide degree of flexibility.
