The TI-59 was the first calculator to utilize removable ROM program modules. The Master Library Module ROM was included with the TI-59, and contained several useful pre-programmed routines and even a game. Additional modules - for such applications as real estate, investment, statistics, surveying and aviation - were sold separately.
Texas Instruments, Inc invented the electronic handheld calculator in 1967. Originally conceived as a product that would create worldwide demand for the microchip, the handheld calculators became a powerful tool for engineers and businessmen. A decade later, it was time for something new, so Texas Instruments first produced the SR-52 programmable calculator with magnetic card storage (1975) and finally TI-59, introduced on May 24, 1977. The press release stated: 'In order to encourage interest in programming and computational problem solving, Texas Instruments introduced a number of new general purpose and specialty calculators... Nearly 400,000 people purchased programmable calculators in 1976, and over 3 million people would be buying programmables by 1979'.
The TI-59 was the first "real" programmable calculator in the world - you could actually use it to perform some useful work, like solving the system of linear equation, finding the zero of a function or even playing a Hi-Lo game... or the game of chess. Fantastic 960 program steps (nearly 1 kilobyte of RAM), 100 data registers, a variety of built-in functions... it was a dream machine, a personal computer you could afford during the late 1970s. The TI-59 even had peripherals - magnetic cards to save programs, a variety of solid-state ROM modules containing up to 5000 program steps of (mostly engineering) software and a PC100C printer.
In the old days, amateur programming was "the way to do things", so hundreds of TI-59 owners spent countless hours uncovering TI-59 secrets and writing miraculously optimized programs - saving a single program step (one byte) sometimes took an hour of work. TI-59 programs were distributed via numerous user clubs, and there was a number of TI-59 related publications.

Der TI-59 ist ein programmierbarer wissenschaftlicher/technischer Taschenrechner von Texas Instruments mit eingebautem Magnetkartenleser, er ist der Nachfolger des ebenfalls mit Magnetkartenleser ausgerüsteten SR-52.
Der TI-59 ist der leistungsfähigste TI-Taschenrechner, der noch mit einer roten LED-Siebensegmentanzeige ausgestattet ist. Zur permanenten Sicherung der vom Anwender selbst erstellten Programme (und Daten) werden je nach Programmgröße bis zu zwei Magnetkarten verwendet. Zur Markteinführung bot der TI-59 als weltweit erster Taschenrechner auswechselbare Programm-Module auf Halbleiterbasis (ROM) mit fest einprogrammierten Anwendungsprogrammen („Solid State Software“).
Ein serienmäßig bereits mitgeliefertes Standard-Software-Modul (Master-Library) enthält 25 Programme aus den Bereichen Matrizen-Rechnung, komplexe Funktionen, Integral-Rechnung, Geometrie, Statistik, Finanzmathematik, Umrechnung von Maßeinheiten, ein Kalenderprogramm, ein einfaches Spiel sowie ein Diagnoseprogramm zum Funktionstest des Rechners und des als Zubehör erhältlichen Thermopapier-Druckers.
