fine, CP/M system on a 5,25 inch disc as a copy included. A Z80 card which permitted the Apple to
switch to the Z80 processor and run a multitude
of programs developed under the CP/M operating
system such as dBase II or WordStar word processing
program.
This card will enable the user to run
one of the largest library of software, although
no 'current' computer system is based on this
operating system, most can run this via some type
of card or emulator. The most common reason someone
would need to have a CP/M card in their Apple
II would be if they needed to run WordStar for
some reason, this was a popular option in the
early days of the Apple II. Some people also use
the CP/M card to run Turbo Pascal for the Apple
II, which was only available in CP/M format. Info

The Zilog Z80 is an 8-bit microprocessor designed
and manufactured by Zilog from 1976 onwards. It
was widely used both in desktop and embedded computer
designs as well as for defense purposes, and is
one of the most popular CPUs of all time. Download

The Z80 came about when Federico Faggin left
Intel after working on the 8080, and by July 1976
Zilog had the Z80 on the market. It was designed
to be binary compatible with the Intel 8080 so
that most 8080 code could run unmodified on it,
notably the CP/M operating system.
In East Germany, an unlicenced clone of the Z80,
known as the U880, was manufactured. It was very
popular and was used in Robotron's and VEB Mikroelektronik
Mühlhausen's computer systems (e.g. the KC85-series)
and also in many self-made computer systems (ex.
COMP JU+TER). In Romania, several Z80 clones were
manufactured: HC85, HC90, HC91, HC2000 (by the
Felix Computers Factory, based in Bucharest) and
TimS (by the Timisoara Technical University).
The HC85 and TimS clones were the most popular

Z80-Softcard, mit dem der Apple II Microsofts
CP/M-Software ablaufen lassen kann. Die 6502 kümmert
sich dann um Floppyverwaltung, Schnittstellen,
Tastatur, Videoausgabe, quasi als Terminal, auf
der Z80-CPU läuft nur das eigentliche Programm.
Ohne Software, Karte ist getestet und funktioniert
bestens.
Der Zilog Z80 ist ein 8-Bit-Mikroprozessor, der
von der Firma Zilog Inc. entwickelt und hergestellt
wurde. Er entstand, kurz nachdem Federico Faggin
die Firma Intel verlassen und seine eigene Firma
Zilog gegründet hatte. Bei Intel hatte er
am 8080 gearbeitet. Im Juli 1976 wurde der Z80
auf den Markt gebracht. Der Z80 wurde entwickelt,
um binär abwärtskompatibel zum Intel
8080 zu sein, dadurch konnten die meisten Programme
ohne Änderungen auf ihm laufen, besonders
das CP/M-Betriebssystem.
Der Z80 überflügelte schnell den 8080
auf dem Markt und wurde die populärste 8-Bit-CPU
aller Zeiten; wenn man die absolute Größe
des Marktes einbezieht, dann ist er die seither
erfolgreichste CPU. Spätere Versionen erhöhten
die Geschwindigkeit der frühen Modelle von
1 MHz auf bis zu 12 MHz. Der Z80 wurde in den
1980er Jahren auch von anderen Halbleiterherstellern
(zum Beispiel NEC) produziert. Außerdem
entstand der stromsparende Z80L (L für LowPower)
sowie eine Variante in CMOS-Technik. Der Prozessor
wurde auch in den legendären Spectrum ZX80
eingebaut.
In der DDR wurde ein nichtlizenzierter Nachbau
des Z80 unter dem Namen U880 entwickelt. Er fand
dort eine weite Verbreitung durch den Einsatz
in den Kleincomputern von Robotron und VEB Mikroelektronik
Mühlhausen (KC 85) sowie in zahlreichen Selbstbau-Computern

Der Z80 ist einer der bekanntesten und weitverbreitetsten
Mikroprozessoren. Trotz seines Alters ist er immer
noch bei vielen Entwicklern beliebt. Jeder, der
so seine "Kindheitserfahrungen" mit
Z80-Maschinen gemacht hat, will ihn auch heute
nicht missen. So ist der Z80 schon fast zu einem
Kult geworden. Ganz nebenbei wird er auch in sehr
