RetroChallenge - Project #3 - Classic/256gs
#3 - Mac Classic II ( 1991-1993) : 256 grays powered by a 68040
- 3.0 Make a presentation movie for my "Classic II/256 gs" project
- 3.1 replace original analog video board for having 256 gray scale
- 3.2 replace defect logic board with a Performa logic board (68LC040)
Don´t try this at home ! High voltage included
This will only be a brief description of what I will actally do with my Mac Classic, so please do not try this with your Classic Mac! The Classic Mac with build in display contains high voltage, a high-vacuum cathode ray tube (CRT) and sensitive electronic parts. Go ahead at your own risk. Nobody can take responsibility for you.
If you like to work on your Classic Mac study this Manual before !

What I did: |
I plugged all parts together and did a first System launch - it works! A nice sharp 256 shaded grayscal Desktop is the revenge for hours of work.
|
To do: |
3.1 / Get all parts build into the Classic II case and close it ;-) |

What I did: |
The Performa Board fits into the Classic II
After removing the fan holder the Performa Motherboard is build into the Classic II. Fits fine! In the middle of the board you can see the backsite of the Motorola 68LC040 CPU.
Here we have the Macintosh Classic II and the analog board parts from the Apple 12´Inch Monocrome Display (M1050). The original Yoke and analog Board, Harddrive and Floppy drive from the Classic II have been removed - plenty of space to work in! The Performa board is now build into the Classic II. |

3.2 replace logic board with a Performa logic board (68LC040) |
What I did: |
I removed the internal fan holder from the Classic II to give more space for the bigger Performa Motherboard. Also the original analog board and the Motherboard are removed, only the Classic II´s 9´Inch tube is still in place.
The fan holder has been removed. Now there is enough space for the Motherboard of the Performa 475. The original fan will be used in the upgraded Classic because the one from the Performa has not enough cooling power. |

What I did: |
I removed the analog board, Yoke and PSU from the Macintosh 12´ Monocrome Display (M1050). This will replace the original Mac Classics display parts. I only use the original 9´Inch tube and the Floppy drive in the upgraded Classic II.
I need to removed the internal fan holder from the Classic II to give more space for the bigger Performa Motherboard.
The van holder reduces the space for the Motherboard. |

Starting the hardware geek project
Don´t try this at home ! High voltage included
First I will remove the analog board, Yoke and PSU from the Macintosh 12´Inch Grayscale Display. Have a look inside:
Look inside the Macintosh 12´Monocrome Display
A problem I was not expecting is the very small Motherboard on the Classic II - It is reduced by the case of the internal van. It seems that I need to remove the internal fan and the holder to get space for the Performa 475 Mother board. It is a Inch longer. See you soon... |

Because of leaked capacitors on the original MotherBoard my Mac Classic II produces Stars and Stripes. I will replace the MotherBoard with a Performa 475 MotherBoard. |
