Masterball is a 3-D puzzle made of 58 high precision, injection molded plastic parts. The design is unique because there are no fixed segments. All of the 32 outer segments can move along both the horizontal and vertical axes. The original puzzle has 8 sectors on a sphere (longitudinal cuts), with each sector divided into 4 segments (latitudinal cuts). It is a permutation puzzle of colored tiles confined to the surface of a sphere. Like its better known relative, Rubik's Cube, the Masterball can be thought of as a group acting on a set of 32 points. A few principles of elementary group theory can be used to cook up solutions to the puzzle.

There are essentially 3 varieties: Geomaster 8 colors (beachball, default colors in this puzzle), Duomaster 2 colors (black and white beachball), and a variety of picture Masterballs. For some reason, they say the Geomaster is easier than the Duomaster. The picture Masterballs are the hardest since all the pieces have a set solved postion. On the Duo and Geo Masterballs pieces could be swapped or in a different order and still be in a solved postion. Zurick University's Mathematics faculty has calculated that Masterball's 32 segments can be arranged in 355,682,548,566,633,480,192,000,000 different possible combinations. Masterball was invented by Dr. Geza Gyovai, a 46 year old Hungarian-born engineer and lawyer now living in Zurich, Switzerland. He spent 6 years and over 1.4 million Swiss francs to design, develop and patent his amazing invention, manufactured by Whole Systems Design, Inc.

See what David Joyner (Assoc. Prof., Mathematics, US Naval Academy) has to say about solving Masterball at his web site.

Masterball is available in a variety of exciting styles. Try the Geomaster or rainbow (pictured above) first. It's the easiest to learn how to solve. The black and white Duomaster is next hardest, followed by the USAmaster. The picture balls, such as the Dragonmaster, Catmaster, Soccermaster, Tennismaster, Globemaster and Circusmaster are the most difficult to solve. Download a (German) windows application to solve the Masterball - you can download it here.

Hier finden Sie meine anderen Computer Sammlerstücke.

August 1989, Patent US 4,856,786.
