The "Tower of Babylon" is one of the many
puzzles that followed Rubik's cube. In principle it
is a sliding puzzle. It was made by Ideal Toy in 1981,
in Hungary. The Babylon Tower, sometimes called the
Ivory Tower, is a sliding piece puzzle which consists
of several discs stacked up into a tower, and they can
rotate about a central axle. There are 6 such discs.
Along the side of the tower are six columns of small
balls in a pieces, in six colours.
The colours in each column range from bright in the
lower disc to pale in the top one. The bottom disc has
a spring allowing one of two opposite balls to be pushed
in, creating a gap. The balls can then slide up or down
their groove from one disc to another because of the
gap. By rotating the discs, the balls and the gap are
moved around to the other columns. An absolute must
for the collection of any serious puzzle enthusiast.
This puzzle was originaly designed by Endre
Pap, who also designed the Hungarian Rings
- both where sold under the trademark "Rubiks".
The patent,
DE 3,104,021 from 2 December 1982, only lists the
assignee Arxon Spiel + Freizeit.
GAME OBJECTIVES: You must order 36
balls, so that there are 6 balls with the same colour
in a column and ordered by shades. You can easily move
them horizontally. They are fastened in a ring. Moving
vertically is only possible with a trick: You can push
a ball at the bottom to the middle (left arrow), so
it disappears. Then the balls move down and form a gap
at the top (right arrow). If you hold the tower horizontally,
you can move the gap to another place.
There are 36 balls and a gap which gives a maximum
of 37! positions. However the colours are equivalent,
meaning that it does not matter which colour goes in
which column. This gives 37! / 6! = 19,116,323,737,814,368,119,883,304,974,417,920,000,000
or 1.9·1040 positions.

Ein original Rubiks Babylon Tower, auch bekannt als
Ivory Tower, in der original Verpackung, ungenutzt und
nie geöffnet.
Beim Zauberturm lässt sich eine Kugel in der
untersten Etage hereindrücken. Darüber wird
dann die nächst höhere Kugel geschoben, so
dass eine Lücke bleibt. Mit diesem freien Feld
kann man nun durch Hoch- und Runterschieben von Kugeln
und durch Verdrehen der Ringe die Kugeln anders anordnen.
Fertig ist das Ganze, wenn alle Farben von kräftig
bis blass in der richtigen Reihenfolge angeordnet sind,
so wie es auf dem Photo zu sehen ist, der Babylon Tower
aus dieser Auktion ist noch ungenutzt!
Im Jahre 1974 gelang Rubik mit der Konstruktion seines
nach ihm benannten Zauberwürfels ein riesiger kommerzieller
Erfolg. Im Zuge dessen erdachte er weitere Rätsel
und mechanische Geduldsspiele, die meist unter seinem
Namen vermarktet wurden. Doch keines der nachfolgenden
mechanischen Puzzles und mathematischen Brettspiele
konnte an den Erfolg des Würfels anknüpfen.
